I have accused myself of being a Christian humanist with transcendental leanings; so in Wesley fashion, I have accepted my own criticism as constructive and used it to my advantage. And I like traditional images and symbols insofar as they can be reimagined and connected to themes and personal life experiences. In my life, I seek a narrative stream and to avoid dogmatic systems or processes. I take an idea, image, or question, like “what is a family,” and combine it with other elements, such as dance steps or George Rodrigue’s Cajuns under the oaks, resulting in a story woven from images (and sometimes a sermon).
